Mission Project
Ivan Kamwine
Born: 1995 Ivan is from Kayera-Kooki, Rakai District. This was the district that was first and worst hit by the HIV/AIDS scourge in Uganda. Whole families were wiped out.
Ivan’s mother, Florence, passed away in August 2004 and his father, Perez, passed away in January 1998.
After the death of his parents, a cousin to his parents adopted Ivan with his sister, Jean. However since he was not working he was unable to adequately take care of them. He therefore approached Watoto to take them and give them care and protection. Lyantonde Town Council approved their transfer to Watoto Child Care Ministries and they came to Suubi Chilren’s Village in September 2004.
Legacy’s Missions Project
While each class may have independent projects, Legacy's long-term and school-wide missions project is to support the Watoto Childcare Ministry that is part of Kampla Pentecostal Church in Kampla, Uganda. The children are helping sponsor Ivan Kamwine who is a child that lives in one of Watoto’s Villages. Each year the children raise money during their winter festivals by selling history-related crafts to help cover Legacy's monthly financial support of Ivan. We encourage the children to pray for him regularly at home and in class. The money sent monthly to Ivan assists with his housing, food and Christian education costs. We will also be writing Ivan letters and sending him an occassional gift. The Watoto Children’s Choir is a group of girls and boys from the three villages in Uganda that tours North America, Australia and Canada. Each year 18-20 children are chosen for the unique privilege of touring for 9 months. Typically the choir visits the Phoenix area in the spring each year, and if possible we will plan to attend a concert together as a class.
If you have any questions about Ivan or the Watoto Ministry, please talk with Mrs. Nancy Pope.
